Malaysia Must Cancel the Boeing Purchase

We, the Malaysian NGOs listed below, note with great disappointment the recent decision by the Malaysian government, through its wholly-owned flag carrier, Malaysia Airlines, to purchase aircraft from Boeing.

It is a well-known fact that Boeing is complicit in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. The United Nations Human Rights Council, in its statement of 20 June 2024, has explicitly named Boeing as one of the corporations supplying weapons to Israel, enabling its brutal military campaign that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

Malaysia has long positioned itself as a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, condemning Israeli aggression and supporting international calls for justice. Malaysia, too, is a member of The Hague Group, which aims to bring international law to bear on Israel. However, this deal with Boeing exposes a glaring inconsistency. Malaysia cannot claim to stand with Palestine while enriching a corporation that arms its oppressors. Economic interests must never outweigh fundamental human rights, and this decision undermines Malaysia’s credibility on the global stage.

By choosing to do business with Boeing, Malaysia is indirectly subsidising a company that profits from apartheid, mass murder and war crimes and, therefore, is morally indefensible and a betrayal of Malaysia’s professed solidarity with Palestine.

We call on the Malaysian government to immediately cancel this purchase and cease all dealings with Boeing until the company ends its weapons supply to Israel. If Malaysia is genuinely committed to justice for Palestine, it must align its economic policies with its political rhetoric. There can be no business as usual with corporations that fuel genocide.
